| What does it mean to be a community?
Different places have their own way to approach this answer.
In Alton, we believe we are all integrated in our acquaintances,
families, and coworkers. We also believe that a strong connection
between the faith-based, political, social and educational
service-driven organization can only help strengthen our commitment
to one another.
In this page you will find an assortment
of educational, social, entrepreneurial and other important
resources for living in Alton. With our roots seeded in colonias,
as well many of our extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) neighborhoods
classified as colonias, we understand the value of
helping others help themselves. Here you will find points
of contacts for school, non profits, micro-lending, and other
resources that can positively impact your life and that of
your neighbor. Lend support or come and check out the services
offered in Alton.
Alton Recreation Center (ARC)
The Alton Recreation Center serves as a
community center for the City of Alton. In partnership with
Texas A&M University CHUD Colonias Program, the city is
able to provide a place where nonprofit organizations can
offer their services to the community. We pride ourselves
in this truly collaborative effort to offer residents access
to recreation, health, and quality of life offerings from
local partners.
Among those offered are Buckner International
which sponsors clothing distributions and free health screenings
in conjunction with Valley Baptist Doctors. Texas A&M
University Colonias Program also offers assistance with CHIP/Medicaid
applications, promotes healthy communities, assists city grant
seeking, sponsors a morning Aerobics session, and co-manages
the ARC by coordinating the Alton Youth Club among other things.
Other important partnerships include:
- Dorcas Seventh Day Adventist Church provides food distributions;
- Food Bank RGV which provides monthly food distributions
to elderly;
- Easter Seals which sponsors a parent support group;
- Texas Migrant Council Head Start which has monthly parent
meetings, nutrition classes, and staff training;
- Texas A&M University IHOS program which provides medical
transportation and colonia outreach work holds work shops
and community meetings;
- La Union del Pueblo Entero provides class ESL classes
and citizenship classes.
- Boys & Girls Club of McAllen-Alton Unit
As you can see, the ARC is a hub for social
groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club,
but it also serves as a homebase for social services such
as the local area Promotoras.

Neighborhood Watch Program
Benjamin Franklin once said, "an ounce
of prevention is worth a pound of care." It was true
then and it continues to hold. The Alton Police Department
has started its first Neighborhood Watch program. The Neighborhood
Watch program was established to minimize crime and report
any suspicious activity that is occurring in each individual
neighborhood. This program was also established to bring community
policing into problematic neighborhoods. Being part of a Neighborhood
Watch program is a natural way to get to know those in your
neighborhood.
At this point and time there are three neighborhoods
that are currently involved in the Neighborhood Watch Program.
The extra vigilance that has been provided by the citizens
involved in the neighborhood watch has already begun to take
effect. Crime and juvenile delinquency have decreased in these
targeted areas.
Those interested in starting a neighborhood
watch program in your area or have any questions regarding
this program contact the Alton Police Department at (956) 432-0700.
Street Light Identification Program
In order to better service the community with its required needs the city is providing the following links to the Electric Companies servicing our area. By working together as a tight net community we can all indentify and report problems that may occur on a daily bases throughout our city. It is said that knowledge is power, and true empowerment happens when communities unit and use this knowledge for a positive outcome. Lets all work together in keeping our city well maintained. Please use the following links to report street lights directly to the Electric Companies and send an E-mail to janie.gaytan@alton-tx.gov at the city so we may follow-up on your request. Thank you for your participation in keeping the City of Alton bright.
